Are we saints or sinners?

Romans 7 is often hotly debated. In it, Paul says things like, “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate” (Romans 7:15). From verses like this, some conclude Paul teaches Christians are still sinners enslaved to sin. Others argue Paul is speaking about his old life as a Pharisee, meaning Christians are saints who have been set free from sin.
