Exodus For Kids | 4.17.2016
Hey kids, this is Bro. Kory and I want tell you a funny story about my mom (you may know her as Memish). A few years ago, we went to Disney World and stayed at a campground. My family stayed in a cabin and Bro. Ricky and Memish stayed in their camper. There was a 50-foot trail through the woods that connect us, so we walked that trail a lot during that week.
At night this trail would be completely dark so I would pull out my phone and use the flashlight app. After a few nights of doing this, Memish asked, “Do you always carry a flashlight with you everywhere you go?” Laughing, I turned to her and said, “No mom, it’s the flashlight app on my phone and you have one too.” She immediately said, “What! You mean to tell me that I have had a flashlight in my pocket this whole time and I didn’t even know it!” Then I pulled out her phone and showed her how to access the app and use her newly discovered flashlight!
The funny thing is, Memish had been stumbling over roots and bumping into trees for the past few days in darkness, when all along she had a flashlight in her pocket that she didn’t even know about!
In Exodus 13:21-22 the Bible says, “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.”
How cool is that?! God lead the people of Israel by a cloud in the day and fire by night. This would have made it easy for them to follow God, but what about us today? How do we follow God since there is no cloud or fire? Here is the cool news: God has given us a flashlight to light up our way, but some of us, like Memish, don’t even realize we have one!
Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Did you hear that?! God has given us a flashlight to see the way we are to go. And that flashlight is His Word. As we read the Bible, we see who God is and what God wants us to do.
So kids, don’t be like Memish who was walking in darkness because she didn’t know she had a flashlight. Instead, pick up the flashlight God has given you, and read His Word. Rather than stumbling through the darkness of this world, let God light up your path so you walk safely, rather than stumble and fall.
